TikTok has permanently suspended paid advertising for Musk, Alex Gibney’s documentary examining Elon Musk’s business and political activities. Distributor Bleecker Street is appealing the decision as the film expands its theatrical release across North America.

The distributor received notice of the suspension on Friday afternoon. It soon found itself unable to purchase advertising placements on the platform. TikTok cited repeated violations of its political content policies, though it has not publicly identified the specific violations.

Distributor Challenges TikTok’s Decision

Bleecker Street confirmed the suspension and expressed disappointment with its timing. The company said it was appealing the decision, though a reversal could come too late to support the film’s current theatrical run.

TikTok has not commented publicly on the matter. Emails exchanged between the platform and the distributor show repeated rejections of paid promotional posts, including the film’s trailer. One TikTok official said the trailer would ‘continue to get pulled from the platform' due to political content.

Another advertisement featuring a quote from The New Yorker was rejected over a ‘static image.’ TikTok also cited the ‘level of severity with political-policy violations' in a message to the distributor, adding that ‘some violations trigger immediate suspension.’

The film’s unpaid TikTok account is still active. One promotional clip suggesting viewers delete their X accounts and discuss a ‘fascist hellscape' had attracted 270,000 views. However, Bleecker Street cannot pay to promote existing posts or purchase new advertising placements.

Film Examines Musk’s Political Influence

Musk explores the billionaire’s companies, his acquisition of Twitter and his political activities, including his work with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Gibney spent more than three years investigating the subject.

The documentary opened with USD 70,000 across four theatres in New York and Los Angeles during its first weekend. It has since expanded to dozens of cities.

TikTok has no official affiliation with Musk, though Larry Ellison is among its part-owners. The documentary features a message from Ellison offering billions of dollars to help finance Musk’s Twitter acquisition. Meta and Google-owned YouTube accepted advertising for the trailer, while X has declined to accept promotional material for the film.
