Meta-owned social media platform Threads is set to introduce a feature called ‘Gems’ to recognize posts and replies that generate meaningful conversations. The feature automatically identifies selected contributions and gives them a special in-app marker, offering creators another way to gain visibility for their content.
The feature is designed to reward originality and discussion rather than engagement numbers alone. Users whose content receives a Gem will be notified and can choose to share a separate post announcing the recognition. According to reports, the feature is currently available to users in the United States.
Gems are virtual recognitions attached to selected public posts and replies. When a contribution receives one, a special icon appears alongside it, helping other users identify content that Threads considers valuable to a discussion.
The selection process is automated rather than based entirely on manual nominations. Threads evaluates contributions according to factors such as originality, fresh perspectives, and the ability to encourage genuine exchanges between users.
For replies, the recognition applies to direct responses to an original post, not replies to other comments. Users can also decline the recognition if they do not want their content marked as a Gem.
Threads is placing emphasis on contributions that add something new to a conversation. Posts that offer a distinct viewpoint, encourage thoughtful responses, or provide original ideas may be more likely to receive recognition.
The platform also considers whether the user genuinely created the content. Recycled material and posts cross-posted from other applications are excluded under the stated criteria.
This approach could encourage creators to focus on discussions rather than simply chasing likes and reposts. However, since the process relies on automated detection, it remains to be seen how consistently the system will distinguish meaningful conversations from posts that attract attention for other reasons.
Despite the use of the word 'reward,' Gems should not be confused with a cash payment or a guaranteed monetization program. The feature currently serves as a form of recognition for selected content, and no direct financial payout has been confirmed.
The system resembles engagement-recognition initiatives introduced by other social platforms, including X’s earlier Bangers program, which highlighted popular contributions

Gems could give creators another incentive to publish original posts and participate in discussions. The feature may also help Threads promote the conversational activity that distinguishes it from platforms that focus more on short-form video or viral content. Its long-term impact will depend on how users respond to the recognition system and whether the automated selection process consistently highlights worthwhile contributions.
