Indian stock market exchanges, NSE and BSE, will remain closed for 12 days this month. The number includes two public holidays and all weekends. Among other holidays, the market is closed for trading or investment on May 1 in observance of Maharashtra Day. Meanwhile, May 28 will be another holiday on Bakri Id.
All segments will stay closed during these dates. This includes equity, derivatives, and currency trading. Securities lending and electronic gold receipts also stop for the day.
Apart from these two holidays, weekends add 10 more non-trading days. Stock markets do not open on Saturdays and Sundays. This is why the total number of closed days reaches 12 in May 2026.
The previous month also had holidays. Markets stayed closed on Good Friday and Ambedkar Jayanti in April. More stock market holiday dates will come later this year.
The market will be closed on November 10 on account of Diwali. Guru Nanak Gurpurab will follow on November 24. The last stock market holiday of the year will be on December 25 for Christmas.
Muhurat Trading will still happen on November 8. This special session is important for many investors. The exchanges will share the exact time later in the year. Some festivals fall on weekends this year. This helps keep the number of working days steady.
The market showed weakness before May started. Sensex and Nifty fell on April 30 by nearly 1%.
The Sensex lost more than 580 points by the end of the day. Nifty also went below the 24,000 level. Rising crude oil prices caused concern in the market. Weak global trends also affected trading.
Experts say high oil prices remain a big issue for India. It increases costs and affects company profits. This keeps the market mood under pressure.
Some stocks saw action despite the weak market. Vedanta moved ahead of its demerger record date. Investors showed interest in the stock. Hindustan Unilever reported strong results. However, the overall market remained weak.
The stock market holiday schedule also affects settlements. Trades move to the next working day after a holiday. Global markets stay open even when Indian markets close. This can create gaps in prices.
The stock market holiday list helps traders plan better. It avoids confusion during trading and settlement. May 2026 has many non-trading days, so planning is important for investors.
