Valve has finally restocked the Steam Deck OLED. For the last few weeks, players from multiple regions have been suffering from limited availability. Many players were waiting for fresh stock, especially as handheld gaming continued gaining popularity.
The restock, however, comes with a rather unpleasant surprise. Buyers in multiple markets noticed that the OLED model now costs $100-$300 more, depending on the storage. The sudden price increase sparked online discussion, with many players questioning whether handheld gaming devices are slowly becoming premium products rather than affordable alternatives.
The Steam Deck OLED has been difficult to find since launch. Its strong demand and limited supply have been an issue from the very beginning. Thus, players often face supply issues and a prolonged waiting period.
When players were sure it could be the same thing this time, Valve came with a surprise price rise for the Steam Deck models. The Steam Deck OLED 512 GB model has jumped from $549 to $789, and the 1 TB model has reached $949, up from the earlier $649 mark.
The price increase for the 1 TB Steam Deck OLED model has made it costlier than the PS5 Pro, which currently costs $899. The increased price isn’t only for the US players, but players from the UK, Europe, Canada, Australia, and Poland will face this increased price.
Some players compared the situation to Sony and its recent PlayStation 5 price increase across multiple countries. Over the last few years, both Sony and Microsoft have adjusted hardware prices due to production and market costs. Valve has not completely escaped the same pressure. OLED screens remain expensive compared to standard LCD panels. Shipping costs and hardware expenses have also stayed high worldwide.
The higher pricing of the Steam Deck OLED reflects a broader trend in the gaming industry. OLED displays cost more to produce, especially for compact handheld systems. Gaming handhelds also need strong cooling systems, batteries, and smaller hardware designs that are harder to manufacture.
At the same time, currency changes and global shipping costs continue affecting electronics companies. As more brands move toward premium handheld gaming devices, prices may continue climbing over the next few years.

When the Steam Deck first launched, many players viewed Valve differently from traditional console companies. The device felt closer to an affordable PC gaming project than a premium console. However, recent price increases and supply limits are starting to change that image.
