Starbucks plans to establish a global capability center in Chennai, India, as part of its technology expansion. The US coffee chain has signed an agreement with the Tamil Nadu government and expects to hire about 800 technology professionals.
The state government announced the agreement on Monday but did not reveal how much Starbucks plans to invest in the new center.
The planned Starbucks technology center will provide services for the company’s international business. Although the government did not share detailed plans, global capability centers often handle software development, finance, data analysis, and research. Companies use these operations to support teams at their main offices and improve internal systems.
Starbucks technology chief Anand Varadarajan said Chennai offers several advantages for the company. According to a Tamil Nadu government press release, he cited the city’s skilled workforce, good infrastructure, and lower employee turnover. However, Starbucks did not respond to a request for comment outside its regular office hours.
The center will create roughly 800 technology jobs in Chennai. The hiring plan will add to the city’s growing base of professionals working for global companies. Starbucks has not announced when recruitment will begin or when the new facility will start operations. It has also not shared details about the roles it plans to offer.
Starbucks already operates roughly 500 cafes in India through its joint venture with Tata Consumer Products. The partnership runs the company’s retail coffee business in the country. The proposed Chennai center will extend Starbucks’ Indian presence beyond cafes and into technology services.
The agreement also gives Starbucks access to India’s large pool of engineering and technology workers. Moreover, Chennai offers established office infrastructure and a growing network of global business centers. The company can use the facility to manage technology tasks that support its operations in several markets.
However, the Tamil Nadu government did not disclose whether the center will operate from a new campus or an existing office building. Starbucks also has not provided a timetable for completing the project. Therefore, details about the center's opening, recruitment process, and operating structure remain unavailable.
Starbucks signed the agreement only days after US pharmacy chain Walgreens reached a similar deal with Tamil Nadu. Walgreens plans to establish a technology center in Chennai that could create about 250 jobs. Meanwhile, Citi, Barclays and American Express already operate global business and technology centers in the city.
Chennai accounts for about 10% of India’s global capability center base, according to the Tamil Nadu government. The city attracts overseas companies because it offers trained workers, transport links and established technology infrastructure. In addition, companies often report lower staff turnover in Chennai than in some competing business hubs.
India now hosts more than 2,100 global capability centers, according to a 2026 Nasscom-Zinnov report. These centers employ about 2.36 million people and generate nearly USD 100 billion in revenue.
Their work now includes finance, software development, research and other high-value business functions. Starbucks will join this expanding corporate network when it opens its Chennai technology centre.
