Star Trek: Ascendancy is getting a major new edition with The Final Frontier. The original board game was released in 2016, and this 4X strategy board game received popularity mostly for its gameplay that revolves around creating a modular galaxy, establishing new colonies, developing civilizations, and fighting enemies. The three core powers that the game presented were Federation, Klingon Empire, and Romulan Star Empire.

Now, after almost a decade, a new edition has been coming. In the latest Gamefound crowdfunding campaign, Gale Force Nine stated that its New Zealand studio had received a finished version of the Deluxe All-In copy of Star Trek Ascendancy: The Final Frontier. The team has been working on the finishing touches before the official distribution begins.

According to the studio, the regional distributions will probably start in Q3. The stock will reach the partners in Q4 2026, with the final fulfillment likely following in early Q1 2027. The new game adds plenty of new things to explore. The collection introduces three civilizations: the Gorn, the Tholians, and the Terran Empire. It also adds a 15-scenario campaign, non-player civilizations, and an updated rulebook. These changes give fans more ways to explore the galaxy, build their empires, and face new rivals.

Can Non-Player Civilizations Make Solo Play Easier?

It’s almost impossible to find enough people to play a long strategy game. Non-player civilizations offer a solution to this problem. They are controlled by AI and can act as rivals, using leader cards and government priority cards to guide their moves. Players can easily add them to fill the empty seats. They can even be used to test the skill of facing several rivals alone. That’s what makes Star Trek: Ascendancy easier to play regularly, even when friends aren't available. Smaller groups can also use these rivals to make each match more challenging.

The upcoming edition will add more civilizations, new campaign missions, and extra ways to play. Therefore, those who enjoy exploring galaxies but never really find a group to complete missions can be able to take a solo journey.
