AI security startup Spur has raised $200 million in a new funding round led by Insight Partners. In 2017, the company was founded by two ex-Defense Department engineers to help websites and apps distinguish between real people and AI-powered bots. Spur plans to use the new funding to improve its technology, hire more employees, and expand its services as AI-generated traffic continues to grow.
Detecting malicious traffic is something that the corporate world has been fighting for a long time. In recent years, the need has increased due to the rise of sophisticated cyberattacks. Insight’s Thomas Krane has stated, “As sophisticated criminal VPNs, residential proxy networks, and anonymization infrastructure proliferate, organizations are increasingly operating with a critical blind spot: they can see the activity, but not the infrastructure behind it.”
AI bots are becoming much smarter than before; they can now copy human behavior, making them harder to detect. This creates problems for online businesses, from fake account creation to spam and fraud. Spur wants to solve these issues by providing companies better tools to identify real users while blocking harmful automated activity.
Spur is not the only company attracting investor attention. In recent times, many AI cybersecurity startups, including Meta Security, have raised $35 million in a Series A funding round led by Canaan Partners. As AI becomes more common, hackers are also using it to launch smarter attacks.
Recently, about the AI traffic surpassing human viewers, the Cloudflare CEO revealed, “Thought it would be end of 2027, then early 2027, but agentic traffic growing so fast that bots have now passed human traffic online for the first time in the Internet’s history.”
Many startups are now building tools to stop fraud, verify user identity, and detect bots. Businesses are looking for better ways to protect their platforms without making life harder for real users.

AI is making online services faster and smarter, but it is also creating new risks. Fake users and automated bots are becoming harder to spot, and they can affect businesses in many ways.
This is why companies like Spur are getting so much attention. Better bot detection helps keep online platforms safe and improves trust for real users.
