Spotify is set to introduce an AI Persona Badge in mid-September for artist profiles representing AI-generated identities. The music streaming platform announced the change on August 11, targeting profiles across artist pages, Search, and playlists.
Spotify aims to help listeners recognize fictional artists and understand who stands behind the music. The platform will identify these profiles through artist disclosures and its own reviews.
Spotify said, “True artist-fan connection can only be built on a foundation of trust and authenticity.” The company will display the badge on artist banners, About sections, Search results, and playlist track rows. Spotify will initially review profiles that meet audience thresholds and attract significant listener attention.
Artists can disclose an AI identity through Spotify for Artists from August 11. Spotify can also review names, images, and other profile details that show photorealistic AI identities. The platform will use two labels based on how it identifies the profile.
The ‘AI Persona’ label applies when an artist discloses an AI identity. The ‘Likely AI Persona’ label applies when Spotify identifies the profile after its review. Artists can appeal when Spotify applies a label incorrectly.
Spotify will also keep AI Personas outside editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default. Their music can still reach listeners through searches, playlists, or direct profile visits. Following an AI Persona will also signal clear interest in hearing its music.
The badge focuses on artist identity rather than AI use during music production. Human artists using AI tools for production, artwork, or mastering will not automatically receive it. Spotify will instead use AI Credits and SongDNA to explain AI involvement within individual tracks.
Spotify also plans to let listeners report suspected AI-generated artist profiles. The feature should arrive in the coming months. The company expects the new system to improve transparency as AI-generated artists continue entering streaming platforms.
