Sony has revived its iconic Walkman headphones with the launch of the MDR-3R. Sony is bringing back the classic 1979 design with USB-C connectivity and updated features for modern devices.

The new wired headphones are based on Sony's original MDR-3 model, launched in 1979 with the company's first Walkman TPS-L2 cassette player. These headphones became a popular choice for people who wanted to listen to music while travelling or moving around.

The MDR-3R retains the familiar lightweight design and signature blue and orange ear cushions. Sony has also included interchangeable pads, allowing users to change the headphones' appearance.

Classic Walkman Design

The biggest change comes in connectivity. Sony has added a USB-C cable to the new headphones, allowing users to connect them directly to compatible smartphones and other devices. The model also comes with a built-in microphone and an in-line remote. Users can control music playback and answer calls directly through the headphones without using their phones.

Sony has retained the original 23mm driver units to preserve the sound character of the earlier model. Sony has made a few small changes to improve the listening experience for today's users. The headphones have an open-ear design and work without charging or Bluetooth pairing. The MDR-3R is also lightweight, making it suitable for everyday use.

Stranger Things Edition and Pricing Details

Sony is also releasing a special Stranger Things Edition inspired by the Netflix series. This version features an engraved show logo, red and black ear cushions and customized packaging. The standard MDR-3R costs USD 59.99 in the US. The Stranger Things Edition is priced at USD 79.99.

Sony said, “The MDR-3R has been redesigned for modern use while preserving the experience value of freely taking music out into the world, which the original MDR-3 helped popularize.” The headphones are available from November 2026. Sony recommends using them with devices that support USB Audio Class 1.0. The company does not recommend their use with Walkman players.
