Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, bringing a 2nm manufacturing process, a 5GHz Oryon CPU and new AI capabilities to its flagship smartphone platform. The company has also introduced the higher-end Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Both chipsets target premium Android smartphones and will debut in devices from major brands including Xiaomi, OnePlus, OPPO, vivo, iQOO and Motorola.
The biggest change is the move to a 2nm process. Smaller semiconductor nodes allow chipmakers to increase transistor density while improving the balance between performance and power consumption.
Qualcomm claims the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 delivers a 10% CPU performance improvement and 37% better CPU power efficiency compared with the previous generation. Its redesigned Adreno GPU reportedly delivers 35% higher performance and 40% better efficiency.
However, these figures do not mean every phone will automatically last 37% longer. Battery capacity, display technology, cooling and software optimisation continue to influence real-world battery life.
Qualcomm is also putting agentic AI at the centre of the new platform. Its reworked Hexagon NPU supports multi-step AI workloads, while the Sensing Hub handles lower-power, context-aware tasks.
Qualcomm says, “ The AI Engine can deliver up to 20% better performance per watt for agentic AI workloads. This could enable more responsive on-device assistants, image processing and personalised features without sending every task to the cloud.”
The impact of 2nm will depend on how phone makers use the additional efficiency. Users could see improvements in gaming, camera processing, AI features and sustained performance rather than a dramatic change in basic tasks.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 goes further with dedicated AI graphics hardware and support for 8K/60fps video. The standard Gen 6 remains focused on bringing much of Qualcomm’s latest CPU, GPU and AI technology to a wider premium-phone segment.
