Samsung May Drop TriFold and Edge as Bold Designs Fail Sales Test

Samsung Rethinks TriFold and Edge Strategy, Shifts Focus to Practical Galaxy Innovations after Weak Demand

Samsung is reassessing the future of its ultra-thin Edge and premium TriFold devices after both products posted weaker-than-expected sales. The move signals a shift from headline-grabbing design experiments to features that appeal to a wider base of buyers.

Galaxy S25 Edge, which measured just 5.8mm in thickness and even undercut Apple’s iPhone Air, failed to attract mainstream users. Buyers continued to favor battery life, performance, and durability over extreme slimness.

The TriFold foldable, priced at nearly US$3,000 (approximately Rs. 2,64,000), saw early sell-outs but remains a niche category because of its high cost, weight, and bulk when folded.

Samsung’s Official Statement?

In an interview with Bloomberg, as cited by digit.in, Won Joon Choi, chief operating officer of Samsung’s mobile division, said the company has not taken a final call on the next generation of these devices. He noted that consumer preferences differ, and Samsung is ‘considering all different options’ for future form factors.

This includes a wider version of the standard Galaxy Z Fold, which could deliver a larger display experience without the complexity of a double-fold design.

Is Thinness Alone No Longer a Selling Point?

Market trends suggest that Apple’s slim iPhone Air has reportedly seen softer demand than its Pro models. The pattern indicates that ultra-thin hardware, on its own, does not guarantee strong sales in the premium segment.

What Direction Will Future Galaxy Phones Take?

Samsung is now focusing on practical upgrades. The recently launched Galaxy S26 Ultra features a built-in privacy display that limits side-angle viewing. The company is also said to be developing a more advanced S Pen.

The broader strategy points to lighter, more affordable single-fold devices that balance large screens with everyday usability. For consumers, this could mean fewer radical designs and more phones built around comfort, functionality, and long-term value.
