Grand Theft Auto 6 has been a hot topic on public discussion forums since the first trailer launch. Even after multiple delays, the gaming community is excited about the Rockstar Games’ upcoming release. The game has now entered the political arena. Russian politicians are reportedly against GTA 6’s release in the country. Their concerns have reopened a familiar debate on entertainment and social responsibility.

Why Russia is Criticizing GTA 6

The criticism mainly focuses on the type of content the game may include. Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto franchise has been renowned for its depiction of crime, violence, adult themes, and satire. GTA 6 is expected to continue the same tradition more glaringly. Russia considers that this type of entertainment will hamper the country’s social and family values.

Mikhail Ivanov, the deputy chairman of the World Russian People's Council, has called for a ban. He has stated, “The creators of 'GTA 6' deliberately go to include destructive and vulgar content in their product, completely unacceptable to the moral health of society.”  He further added, “This includes the planned inclusion of scenes of male striptease in the game, which is a direct and cynical violation of basic moral norms and traditional spiritual values.”

This is not the first time Rockstar has faced such criticism. Earlier GTA titles were also accused of promoting violence or inappropriate behavior. Yet those controversies increased public attention rather than reducing it.

Video Game Restrictions are Not New in Russia

Russia has a long history of closely examining entertainment content. Films, television programs, books, and video games, all forms of entertainment, face restrictions in the country at different times.

Gaming has become a bigger part of that discussion over the last decade. Titles that contain violence, political themes, or controversial subjects often receive extra attention from regulators and public figures.

Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, is one of the companies that suspended game sales in Russia after it attacked Ukraine in 2022. Thus, there’s a good chance that GTA 6 won’t be sold in the nation, even without an official ban.

Gaming Now Becomes a Part of Bigger Cultural Arguments

The GTA 6 debate is about more than one game. It reflects a wider clash over culture, media, and public values. Video games now reach millions of people worldwide. They are increasingly treated like films, television shows, and other major forms of entertainment, for instance, The Witcher series on Netflix.

It should be noted that although Russian politicians are asking for the ban, GTA 6 was the first one to do it to them. Whether this affects the games’ sales in the long-term, remains to be seen.
