Reddit is planning to introduce Face ID verification to confirm the presence of real humans and reduce bot activity. The move is aimed to protect Reddit’s authenticity, which is a place for real people to share genuine opinions.

It is also expected to strengthen trust and address growing concerns around fake accounts and automated interactions.

Why Reddit Is Considering Face ID

Reddit is considering the use of Face ID verification and biometric tools to confirm that people using the platform are real humans and not bots. Speaking on the TBPN podcast, Huffman said Reddit is looking at “lightweight” verification technologies such as Face ID, Touch ID, and passkeys.

These systems can confirm that a real person is present without requiring users to reveal their identity. “The most lightweight way is with something like Face ID or Touch ID in the family of technology called passkeys they actually require human presence,” Huffman said.

He explained that this verification approach could help Reddit reduce spam, bots, and automated accounts while maintaining the privacy that users expect from the site.

The goal, he said, is to keep Reddit a place for “humans talking to humans” while avoiding the need for real-name verification. “Reddit’s version is: is this a person, but we don’t want to know which person this is this part of our promise to our users is we don’t know your name, but we do want to know that you’re a person,” he said.

Benefits for Users and Communities

Huffman described biometric authentication as one of the simplest ways to prove that an account is used by a human. He explained that verification tools require a person to physically interact with a device. It confirms human presence. At the same time, he stressed that Reddit does not want to know who the user is, only that the user is real.

Reddit has long allowed anonymous accounts, but that openness also makes it easier for fake profiles to operate. Huffman noted that the company already removes large numbers of suspicious accounts every day. New verification methods could make that process more effective without changing the core experience for users.

Social media platforms are facing a rise in AI-generated posts, automated comments, and coordinated bot activity. A team of researchers released AI-powered, human-like chatbots on Reddit.

The bots adopted people such as abuse survivors or advocates of controversial topics and posted over 1,700 comments.

The platform has not announced any official timeline for introducing Face ID or similar verification tools.
