Rockstar Games has quietly released a physical PS5 version of Red Dead Redemption and it has caught fans off guard since there was no trailer or blog post. The game simply appeared online for pre-order. While gaming enthusiasts have been talking about the digital version for quite some time, getting a physical copy of the popular game seems like a massive win for collectors.

The original game was first launched in 2010 and it’s been one of the most loved Western adventures in gaming history to date. The upcoming PS5 version isn’t a remake, but it will bring some improvements.

Rockstar Games Takes a Silent Route With PS5 Release

The physical version of RDR is releasing on May 4. Pre-bookings have already started on Amazon and other platforms. However, Rockstar Games looks to be treating its physical PS5 version of the game like a stealth release. The process has been initiated without the developer making any announcements. This low-key launch stands out among others since most releases these days are heavily promoted.

The PS5 version of Red Dead Redemption features enhanced visuals and frame rate. Players can expect up to 4K resolution at 60 FPS. It also supports HDR for better colors and lighting. Another useful addition is the save transfer. Players can carry over progress from the PS4 version without hassle.

The physical edition comes with both the base game and the Undead Nightmare expansion. The full package is priced at $30. This makes it one of the more affordable PS5 releases right now.

A Disc for a 16-Year-Old Adventure: Is it Worthy?

Physical disc releases have become rare in recent years. Now, publishers mostly focus on digital versions. Boxed copies are often limited to major new titles. That’s what makes the release of an older game on disc even more unusual.

Fan reactions have been mixed. Some players are happy to get the chance to connect to the game’s physical version. However, others are not impressed. The most common reaction from fans is frustration.

A lot of them have been waiting for the PS5 version of Red Dead Redemption 2, the fourth-best-selling game of all time. Thus, expectations were high for a proper next-gen upgrade of RDR2; instead, Rockstar presented them with a physical disc of its 16-year-old predecessor.

Is Red Dead Redemption 2 Coming Next?

Fans are speculating there’s more to this new release. Leakers and industry insiders claim that the native PS5 version of RDR2 was also planned for 2026, but it’s now likely delayed. The postponement can even be prolonged to 2027. One reason could be the release of GTA 6 toward the end of the year.

At this point, this one GTA title is consuming all of Rockstar’s resources and there is also past evidence to this trend. A next-gen version of Red Dead Redemption 2 was mentioned in leaked Xbox documents in 2023. This adds weight to the claims. For now, fans are left with a simple choice. Pick up the physical PS5 version or wait for something bigger.
