Sony appears to be moving away from PlayStation VR2 as the headset disappears from major online stores. Recent stock shortages in the United States and Japan have raised concerns about its future. Sony has not confirmed any discontinuation, but its missing store listings suggest a possible change in hardware plans.
The PlayStation VR2 has become difficult to find as retailers run out of stock. Sony's official PlayStation Direct store no longer lists the headset in the United States. Direct access to its product page also returns an error. Several major retailers have limited availability, with some offering only refurbished or pre-owned units.
The situation varies across other markets, with some official stores still showing the headset for sale. Sony continues to list PlayStation VR2 in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe. However, customers in Canada, Australia and New Zealand must check third-party retailers.
The shortage also affects major online retailers, including Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart. Some third-party sellers charge around USD 750 for the headset, well above its reduced official price. Sony cut the PlayStation VR2 price from USD 549.99 to USD 399.99 in March 2025.
Sony's earlier decisions also raise questions about the headset's future. Reports indicated that the company paused PSVR2 production in March 2024 after weaker sales. However, Sony has not confirmed whether manufacturing resumed or permanently stopped.
The virtual reality gaming market faces other challenges as well. Rising production costs and fewer dedicated VR game releases have affected the platform's growth. Beat Saber also stopped receiving PlayStation VR2 updates in early 2026.
Existing owners can still use their headsets to play compatible games on the PlayStation 5. Sony's PC adapter also allows players to access supported SteamVR games. However, limited stock could make replacement devices and future repairs harder to find.
For now, Sony has not announced any plans to discontinue PlayStation VR2. The missing store listings suggest a possible sales slowdown, rather than confirmed product cancellation. The next few months could reveal whether Sony plans to restock the headset.
