Parag Agrawal made a strong comeback after his controversial exit from Twitter. The Indian-American technology executive, who served as the social media platform’s CEO before Elon Musk’s takeover, now leads AI startup Parallel Web Systems.
The company reached a $2 billion valuation after raising $100 million in a Series B funding round led by Sequoia Capital. The latest investment takes Parallel’s total funding to $230 million and places Agrawal at the helm of one of the fast-growing startups in the AI infrastructure space.
Elon Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion in October 2022 and fired Agrawal from his role as Twitter's CEO, along with other top executives. Agrawal then distanced himself from the social media scene and decided to turn his attention towards artificial intelligence.
Agrawal founded Parallel Web Systems to build infrastructure for autonomous AI agents. Its technology helps AI agents search, browse, and use information from the open web for complex tasks. In contrast to traditional search technologies that were developed mainly for human use, Parallel's technology specializes in machine-oriented research. The platform can be used by AI agents to gather information, browse websites, and do multistep research.
This technology finds its application in legal research, finance, insurance, and enterprise intelligence. Among the companies using Parallel's platform is an AI legal startup, Harvey. Additionally, more than 100,000 developers are using the infrastructure.
The latest round of funding for Parallel was led by Sequoia Capital, and other current investors include Kleiner Perkins, Index Ventures, Khosla Ventures, First Round Capital, Spark Capital, and Terrain Capital. The company will use the funds to expand its R&D efforts and strengthen its sales and marketing operations while targeting more enterprise customers.
Parallel has also expanded its partnership with Google, as customers from the Google Cloud who develop AI agents using Gemini can now benefit from the search engine technology. This is another possible way into a larger enterprise ecosystem for Agrawal’s startup.
Agrawal’s journey from a short-lived Twitter CEO tenure to leading a $2-billion AI startup highlights the rapidly changing technology landscape.
