OpenAI bought tens of thousands of Mac Minis and Mac Studios as it expands efforts to train AI agents capable of operating computers. According to The Information, people familiar with the company’s plans said OpenAI is using the machines for reinforcement learning and remains eager to secure more units.

The reported purchase can be OpenAI’s most demanding AI workloads typically rely on large-scale accelerator infrastructure. Its Mac strategy instead targets a more specialized requirement: training agents that can interact with computers and perform multi-step tasks.

Mac Finds a Role in AI Training

Reinforcement learning allows AI systems to improve through repeated trials and feedback. For computer-use agents, learning processes may include learning how to use different applications and perform different commands.

Apple desktop computers provide the right balance between processor performance, RAM capacity, and efficiency. Their memory-sharing system allows the CPU and the GPU to access the same memory space. This can be beneficial in some cases of AI processing.

Also, Mac Mini and Mac Studio feature active cooling systems that make them better suited for running lengthy AI processes than compact notebooks with limited thermal capabilities.

New Direction for AI infrastructure

OpenAI’s Mac purchases do not signal an immediate replacement for NVIDIA-based AI infrastructure. Instead, they point to a broader shift towards specialised computing for agentic AI.

As AI systems move beyond generating text and images to operating software and completing tasks autonomously. Companies may increasingly deploy different hardware for different stages of development. Apple’s compact desktops could therefore become an increasingly important part of the AI infrastructure landscape.
