OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Terra, a new AI model designed to interact directly with computer applications and automate everyday work. Launched on October 26, 2026, the model can understand what appears on a computer screen, click buttons, enter text, and switch between applications to complete multi-step tasks.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the launch on X, formerly Twitter, writing, “6.1 Terra is here! It is good at a lot of things, but we are especially excited for this new era of computer use.”

GPT-6.1 Terra Can Operate Computer Applications

Unlike conventional AI chatbots that primarily respond to prompts with text, GPT-6.1 Terra can work with software interfaces much like a human user. The model is designed to interpret visual information and carry out tasks across applications, potentially helping businesses automate repetitive workflows.

These capabilities could help with activities that involve moving information between software platforms, filling out forms, and handling routine office tasks. The launch reflects OpenAI's broader push to develop AI systems that can take action rather than generate responses.

OpenAI Claims Faster Performance and Lower Costs

OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Terra completes tasks roughly three times faster on average than its more advanced models, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra. The company has also reduced standard API prices by 50% compared with the previous GPT-5.6 Terra model.

The API now costs $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. The lower pricing is intended to make the model more accessible to developers building applications that handle automated tasks at scale.

Accuracy and Coding Capabilities Improve

OpenAI has reported improvements in the model's accuracy. In the company's internal tests, the error rate on prompts designed to induce mistakes fell from 53.6% with GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7% with GPT-6.1 Terra. At maximum reasoning effort, the error rate dropped further to 4.3%.

The model has also improved at coding, scoring more than twice as high as its predecessor on complex terminal benchmarks. OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Terra is rolling out to programmers through platforms such as GitHub Copilot.

GPT-6.1 Terra is available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers through ChatGPT Work and Codex. Developers can also access it through OpenAI's API and Amazon Bedrock, according to the report.
