OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Warns Time is Running Out for AI Cyber Defense

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman urged governments, technology firms, and security experts to strengthen defenses against AI-enabled cyberattacks. More than 100 organizations backed the warning, which addressed risks to critical infrastructure and individuals while recommending stronger passwords, multifactor authentication, and software updates.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has called for urgent cooperation to strengthen cyber defense against fast-developing artificial intelligence threats. He described the current period as a critical point for governments, technology companies, researchers, and security teams.

The warning follows an open letter that drew support from more than 100 organizations. It called for stronger defenses before AI-enabled attacks become more advanced and widespread. The group said coordinated action must protect public services, businesses, and individuals.

Sam Altman Calls for Urgent Joint Action

Altman used an X post to press the technology sector for a broad response. “This is a critically important moment for cyber defense with AI; there is not much time to act,” he wrote.

He welcomed specialists who want to work with OpenAI, its partners, or competing companies. “We are happy if you want to work with us or any of our competitors or partners, but please take this moment seriously,” Altman added. He then said, “Only an urgent and intense collective response will work.”

The joint letter directed its appeal toward companies and governments worldwide. It cited possible threats to hospitals, water systems, financial networks, and internet services. Kevin Powers, a Boston College Law School cybersecurity faculty director, said the message appeared aimed at policymakers. He said authorities should treat cyber defense as a national security matter.

AI Cyberattacks Increase Fraud Risks

Artificial intelligence helps security teams study data, spot unusual behavior, and respond to threats faster. At the same time, criminals can use similar tools to automate attacks. They can produce convincing messages, voices, images, and videos at scale.

Cybersecurity specialists identify phishing and deepfake scams among the clearest risks facing consumers. Dominic Sellitto, a University at Buffalo professor, said AI makes phishing faster, cheaper, more personal, and easier to expand. Criminals can copy familiar writing styles or create urgent messages that appear credible.

The FBI received more than 22,000 complaints involving AI-related internet crimes during 2025. Those complaints covered more than $893 million in reported losses, according to its annual Internet Crime Report. Common schemes include calls that imitate relatives and request emergency payments. Spoofing tools can also display a trusted phone number.

Simple Security Steps Still Provide Protection

Security experts say established safeguards can reduce exposure to AI-assisted fraud. People should activate multifactor authentication and install software updates promptly. They should also use unique passwords or passkeys for every account. Password managers can help users create and store strong login details.

People should verify unusual requests through a separate communication channel before sending money or sharing information. Peter Swire, a Georgia Tech professor, advised people to end suspicious calls. They can then contact the person through a known number. Families can also create a private codeword for urgent situations.

Security experts urged users to pause when messages create pressure, fear, or unusual financial demands.

Users should also limit the sensitive material they enter into AI chatbots. Cliff Steinhauer of the National Cybersecurity Alliance said users should check how services store, use, and share data. Personal, financial, and confidential records require careful handling.

Organizations face broader duties under the collective appeal. They need trained security teams, tested response plans, regular software updates, and clear reporting channels. 

Governments can support information sharing and establish common security standards. Meanwhile, technology companies can test advanced models, disclose identified risks and provide defensive tools. Altman’s warning places speed and cooperation at the center of that work.
