OpenAI is likely to bring advertising to ChatGPT. The test is applicable only in the free and Go plans for adult users. ChatGPT Plus, Business, Pro, Education, and Enterprise plans will continue to include no ads.

OpenAI Experiments with Ads: What's New

OpenAI’s latest experiment is solely to raise revenue. The company has assured that the ads will not manipulate, impact, or change ChatGPT’s answers. Answers to all our queries will still be based on the nearest and most accurate data.

The AI company further explained that ads will be shown separately from the usual answers and labelled as sponsored.

Ads for the test will be selected based on their relevance to users’ conversations. The ads will be built around:

  • Topic discussed by users

  • Users’ existing/previous chats

  • History of users interacting with ads

ChatGPT Ads: New Stream of Revenue?

Revenue from ads will help cover the cost of developing and maintaining ChatGPT. Keeping ChatGPT fast, free, and cost-effective needs major investment, and advertising is expected to fund it. This will help more people access powerful yet free AI tools.

Plan Ahead

Privacy is the major threat and concern with AI. To address this issue, OpenAI states that user privacy will remain protected.

Key aspects of data protection include:

  • Advertisers do not have access to personal details, chat history, conversations, or memories

  • ChatGPT ads are receiving only basic summary data

  • No ads for users under 18 years

  • Ads with no sensitive content, such as mental health, health, or politics.

  • User control over experience.

  • User feedback in dismissing irrelevant ads

OpenAI stated in an announcement, “If you prefer not to see ads, you can upgrade to our Plus or Pro plans, or opt out of ads in the Free tier in exchange for fewer daily free messages.”

As part of the new experiment, users can also delete ad-related data, see why a specific ad was shown, and personalize their ads. These ads will benefit the company while prioritizing the safety of users’ data.
