OpenAI is reportedly preparing to make its consumer hardware debut with an AI-powered smart speaker, marking a significant expansion beyond software and generative AI services. Bloomberg reported that the firm is working on an all-new device without a display, meant to serve as an AI companion rather than a smart speaker.

This new device is anticipated to be developed in partnership with the hardware startup io, founded by Jony Ive, who formerly worked at Apple. This device is likely to launch in 2027 and could cost more than $300

AI-First Approach Over Traditional Smart Speakers

Unlike Amazon Echo or Google Nest speakers, OpenAI's new speaker is reportedly being developed as an AI-native computer centered around voice conversations. Without the need for a touchscreen interface, the speaker will reportedly be driven by ChatGPT through voice-first interaction.

It appears that the gadget will come in the shape of a doughnut or hockey puck and would thus be small enough to be carried inside the home. The speaker is expected to have cameras, microphones, sensors, and lighting components, along with some movable parts in reaction to user interactions.

Influence of Jony Ive's Design

The smart speaker is one of several projects under OpenAI's broader hardware strategy, with Jony Ive playing a leading design role. Though the speaker will follow Ive's minimalistic approach to design, it does not look like it will copy any Apple product.

OpenAI has previously confirmed it is working on a family of AI-powered devices, although the company has not officially announced product specifications or launch timelines.

Competition Set to Intensify

If the reported timeline holds, OpenAI will enter a market currently dominated by Amazon, Google and Apple. However, instead of competing solely on smart home controls, the company appears to be betting on conversational AI as the core user experience.

The device could become OpenAI's first step toward building an ecosystem of AI-powered consumer hardware, extending ChatGPT beyond smartphones and computers into everyday living spaces. While the company has yet to confirm the reports, the project signals its growing ambitions to reshape how people interact with artificial intelligence.
