OpenAI’s long-discussed entry into consumer hardware could start with a much simpler product than expected. A fresh leak suggests the ChatGPT maker is working on AI-powered earbuds that may arrive before any advanced standalone hardware.

According to recent information shared by a known tipster, OpenAI’s first consumer gadget could be a pair of smart earbuds built around voice interaction. The earbuds are allegedly codenamed ‘Dime’ internally. The name reportedly appeared in a patent filing spotted in China and linked to the company.

If the claims are accurate, OpenAI may use earbuds as an entry point into hardware rather than launching a complex AI gadget right away. This approach could help the company test consumer demand while keeping costs and production risks under control.

Focus on Voice-first AI Features

The leaked earbuds are expected to focus mainly on audio-based interactions. The gadget could allow users to talk directly to OpenAI’s models for tasks like asking questions, getting quick help, or receiving real-time responses without touching a screen.

By keeping the experience voice-led, OpenAI may offer hands-free access to its AI tools more naturally. The earbuds are not expected to run heavy computing on their own, which could help keep the design simple and battery use low.

Advanced Hardware Plans Face Delays

The OpenAI earbuds leak also points to delays around a more advanced AI gadget that the company is said to be working on. This larger product, expected to offer stronger on-device processing, may be pushed back due to supply issues.

A shortage of high-bandwidth memory has reportedly raised component costs, making large-scale production harder at the moment. As a result, OpenAI may prioritise launching the simpler earbuds first, while waiting for prices and supply conditions to improve before moving ahead with advanced hardware. Shipments of the first consumer gadget are now expected in early 2027, though a limited launch could happen earlier.

Official Signals, but No Confirmation Yet

OpenAI has already confirmed that it is developing its first AI hardware product. Chris Lehane, Chief Global Affairs Officer, has said the company plans to release its first gadget later this year, without sharing details about its form. However, the company has not commented on the earbuds, the ‘Dime’ name, or the leaked timeline.

Why This Move Matters

If OpenAI begins its hardware journey with AI earbuds, it could signal a careful and practical approach to consumer tech. Starting small may help the company understand how people want to use AI in everyday life before moving on to larger, more complex hardware. A successful earbuds launch could shape how OpenAI designs future consumer gadgets and how AI fits into everyday use.
