Mistral AI is challenging Chinese Artificial Intelligence models in the field of cybersecurity. Recently, the French AI company CEO, Arthur Mensch, claimed the same in a conference in ‌Abu Dhabi. In his speech he mentioned, “The model we're actually announcing today is actually above the Chinese models on certain aspects, including cyber. So the narrative that Europe cannot compete is something that is not true.”

However, he carefully avoided taking any model’s name while comparing. He even kept all the test details under wraps. Still, Mensch said the results show that Europe can compete with the US and China in AI.

Mistral AI is just three years old, but in this span it has created a strong position in the AI race. However, the company often faces challenges from the flagship US rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic, and even from the low-cost Chinese models.

To address this issue, the French company has raised €3 billion at a valuation of about €21 billion in September 2026. Mensch said Mistral’s position outside the US and China could help it win customers in places such as the Gulf and Asia-Pacific.

Chinese AI companies have made a name for themselves by offering capable models at lower costs. Mistral is taking a wider route. The company isn't just trying to sell access to its AI models; instead, it is also building tools and services that businesses can use to run AI.

Mistral Wants More Than Model Sales

Mistral’s business plan goes beyond launching new models. Companies can use its AI models, get computing power, and build tools around their own data. Its services also support private and on-site AI use. This can help businesses that don't want to send all their data to a public AI service.

This gives Mistral several ways to make money from the AI boom. The new model may help bring attention to the company, but the bigger goal is to turn that attention into long-term business. The real test will come when customers start using the model and its results can be compared in real-world work.
