Microsoft Pulls Copilot from WhatsApp: Policy Shift Forces Exit Soon

Microsoft to Remove Copilot from WhatsApp by January 15, 2026, After Policy Shift

Microsoft has confirmed Copilot will no longer work on WhatsApp starting January 15, 2026. However, users can continue chatting with Copilot on WhatsApp until the cutoff date, when the service will stop working.

The decision was driven by new WhatsApp platform policies, which will remove all LLM-powered chatbots from the platform starting January 15. This will make Copilot’s exit a policy-enforced move rather than a product shutdown.

Users Advised to Export Chat History Before Cutoff

For users who relied on Copilot on WhatsApp, Microsoft advises that they first export chat history through WhatsApp’s built-in tools before the feature is disabled. When Copilot goes dark on WhatsApp, chat records can no longer be transferred to other Copilot applications or platforms.

The only way users can keep their earlier conversations is to export them, since Microsoft will not provide a migration path within Copilot’s ecosystem.

Copilot is Still Available on App, Web, and Microsoft Windows

Even after leaving WhatsApp, Copilot will be available on multiple platforms. Users can still access the AI assistant via:

  • Copilot mobile app for iOS and Android

  • Copilot on the web: copilot.microsoft.com

  • Copilot on Windows

The platforms offer many of the same features you get with WhatsApp, as well as some extras: Copilot Voice, Vision, and Mico, a companion, like presence. For the most part, service is free, but some capabilities might be locked behind subscriptions or use limits.

WhatsApp Policy Shift is not a Product Retreat

The move only ensures that Microsoft is not dialing back support for Copilot but adapting to WhatsApp’s updated rules. All assistant capabilities remain intact across official channels, ensuring users can continue their workflows without disruption, as long as they shift to the app, web, or Windows versions.

Exporting chat history remains the most urgent step, with the deadline approaching for those who want to preserve their Copilot-WhatsApp conversations.
