Microsoft executive Helen Chiang has left the company just three months after becoming Xbox's first chief operating officer (COO). Her departure ends a 21-year career at Microsoft, during which she held several leadership positions, including heading the Minecraft business.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma confirmed Chiang's exit in an internal memo on October 23. However, the company has not disclosed why she is leaving or whether she left voluntarily. Other Xbox leaders will divide Chiang's responsibilities while Microsoft works out its next steps.

Helen Chiang's Sudden Exit from Xbox

Chiang took over the newly created COO position in July 2026. Her appointment was part of a broader organizational reset to bring Xbox's different businesses under a single operating structure. In her announcement, Sharma described Chiang as an experienced leader who had helped build some of Xbox's important businesses. The role gave Chiang responsibility across content, hardware, platforms and services, with direct reporting to Sharma.

Her departure after such a short period in the position has raised questions about Xbox's leadership plans. However, Microsoft has not provided a public explanation for the timing of the exit.

A 21-Year Career at Microsoft

Before becoming Xbox COO, Chiang led Mojang, the studio behind Minecraft. She played a key role in overseeing the franchise, one of Microsoft's most recognizable gaming properties. Her experience also included work on Xbox Live, Microsoft's online gaming service. Over the years, she held positions that connected game development, services and the wider Xbox business.

When announcing her promotion, Sharma said Chiang would help improve investment decisions, bring business units together and strengthen accountability across the division.

What Happens to the Xbox COO Role?

For now, other Xbox executives are sharing Chiang's immediate duties. Sharma said further information about COO leadership would be shared once plans were finalized. The wording suggests Microsoft has not yet announced a permanent replacement or confirmed whether the position will remain unchanged. The company has also declined to discuss the circumstances surrounding Chiang's departure.

Leadership Changes Come During Xbox's Reset

Chiang's exit comes as Xbox continues to review how its gaming businesses operate. With the COO role left without a permanent leader, attention will now turn to how Sharma reorganizes responsibilities and maintains the strategy introduced earlier this year.
