Digital connectivity is one of the trending issues, but a lot of regions still suffer from bad internet issues. As the demand for digital connectivity is increasing across the globe, Meta has come up with a unique and innovative solution to the bad internet problem.

Facebook’s parent company Meta has taken an initiative to connect two countries from two different continents with a subsea cable to enhance this connectivity. This is a groundbreaking move to enhance digital connectivity and looks like the most ambitious subsea project that Meta has ever conducted.

Meta is Trying to Improve Global Connectivity

Around a week ago, Meta announced its new multi-billion-dollar venture, Project Waterworth, which has been taken to craft the world’s longest undersea cable system that will consist of an underwater cable stretched across 50,000 kilometers, and connects the United States, Brazil, South Africa, India, and several other countries from the five continents. The notable part is the length of the cable is going to surpass Earth’s circumference.

Considering that the subsea cables are the key to the internet connectivity that carries more than 90% of the traffic worldwide, Meta's upcoming Project Waterworth is about to open new oceanic corridors. Reportedly, this subsea cable will contribute to increasing internet speed in these regions, which will eventually boost AI innovations.

Over the past decade, Mark Zuckerberg’s company has developed more than 20 undersea cable systems in collaboration with various partners, but this is going to be the most ambitious one. Usually, these projects used to feature 8 to 16 fiber pairs, but Project Waterworth will feature 24 fiber pairs to maximize the capacity and speed. This will lead to greater economic and technological growth.

These cables will be set at 7,000 meters depth to avoid any risks from ships or other natural hazards. With advanced technology and engineering techniques, Meta is trying to ensure the longevity of the subsea cables.

Project Waterworth and Its Implications for India

India is one of the growing countries that is currently going through rapid digital growth. With Meta’s Project Waterworth, this growth will be further boosted as India will be one of the significant beneficiaries of this project. Once this subsea digital connectivity highway is done, it will provide the country with faster internet speed, which will perfectly align with the ambitious plans of the country to enhance its digital infrastructure and integrate more seamlessly into the global digital economy.

Apart from that, this upgraded connectivity will probably open new ways for technological advancement and economic opportunities in India. The faster internet speed will empower even small businesses to conduct research and contribute to the economic and technological empowerment of the country.

This initiative is monumental, and if Meta finishes this multi-billion-dollar project successfully, connecting countries over five continents with a subsea cable, it will create a history in the field of digital connectivity.
