Meta is letting go of employees it hired from AI security startup Virtue AI just four months after bringing them into Meta Superintelligence Labs. The departures include Virtue AI co-founders Bo Li, Dawn Song and Sanmi Koyejo, along with other members of the startup’s team.

Meta Cites Differences in Working Styles

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone confirmed the departures to Semafor and said the arrangement did not work out as planned because of differences in working styles.

“Unfortunately, the arrangement didn’t work out as planned,” Stone said. He added that Meta Superintelligence Labs remains focused on AI safety, alignment and frontier risk.

The decision comes months after Meta recruited the Virtue AI team to strengthen its work around AI safety, security and frontier risks. In June, Meta Superintelligence Labs hired Li, Song and Koyejo, along with other employees from the startup.

Virtue AI Worked with OpenAI, Anthropic

Before joining Meta, Virtue AI had worked with companies including Anthropic and OpenAI, as well as the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

The startup had developed enterprise AI security tools covering automated red teaming, runtime guardrails, and AI governance. Its work focused on security around increasingly capable AI systems and AI agents.

The hiring aimed to strengthen Meta’s security efforts around AI agents as concerns grew over the safety of increasingly capable artificial intelligence systems.

Meta Continues AI Safety Focus

The departures come as Meta continues to shape its broader AI strategy and expand its capabilities around advanced AI systems. AI safety and security have become an increasing focus for technology companies and policymakers as AI systems become more capable.

Stone said Meta Superintelligence Labs remains focused on AI safety, alignment and frontier risk despite the decision to part ways with the Virtue AI team.

The team did not immediately respond to requests for comment, Semafor reported.
