Meta Drops Kenyan Firm Sama Following Ray-Ban Smart Glasses Scandal

Meta has officially ended its relationship with the Kenyan outsourcing company Sama. The decision came following a backlash over privacy concerns surrounding Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. The controversy began after reports revealed that sensitive visual and audio data were collected and monitored by outsourcing employees during moderation. 

Industry experts have highlighted that this arrangement raises serious ethical and privacy concerns, especially as wearable devices become more integrated into daily life. Meta never publicly acknowledged the reason, but the contract termination shows the company has taken things seriously.

Meta’s partnership with Sama focused heavily on content moderation and AI data labeling. However, the Ray-Ban Meta glasses controversy has brought those operations into the public spotlight. The collaboration began in 2017, but an investigation by Swedish newspapers has shown that private images of the glass-wearers, including their bedroom and toilet activities, are sometimes viewed by Sama workers. 

The contract cancellation could result in 1,108 Sama employees losing their jobs, within 6 days notice in Nairobi, Kenya. In their defense, the Sama authority said, “at no point were we notified of any failure to meet those standards, and we stand firmly behind the quality and integrity of our work.”

The situation highlights one of the biggest challenges in the wearable technology industry. Smart glasses continuously collect data to improve AI features such as voice assistance, object recognition, and contextual awareness. However, the more data these devices collect, the greater the concerns around surveillance and consent.

What Meta’s Sama Exit Means for Outsourcing in the AI Industry
