Marvel's Wolverine Struggles to Match Spider-Man 2's Sales Momentum

Marvel’s Wolverine delivered a strong opening, but its sales momentum appears to have weakened in the weeks following its release. Sony’s latest financial figures show that the PlayStation 5 exclusive sold 2.4 million copies worldwide in its first 50 days, raising questions about whether it can match the commercial success of Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man titles.

These figures are based on Sony's second-quarter earnings, which provide a better picture of the game's sales. According to an earlier estimation by the market research firm, Alinea Analytics, Wolverine was expected to have reached 1.9 million units sales in the first three days after its release, thereby earning USD 130 million.

If those estimates are accurate, the game added only about 500,000 sales over the following several weeks. This suggests its initial demand was considerably stronger than its performance after launch.

Spider-Man Set a Much Higher Benchmark

Comparisons with Insomniac’s previous superhero games make the slowdown more noticeable. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 sold five million copies in only ten days since its launch. This game was favored by the fame of the franchise and the gamers' interest.

The reaction to Wolverine has been rather mixed. While the combat and character portrayal in it were positively reviewed, there were certain complaints concerning the game design.

Despite the slower sales, the game has not been a commercial failure. It was September 2026’s best-selling game in the US, according to Circana data, and remains one of PlayStation Studios’ stronger new releases this year.

Can Wolverine Maintain Long-Term Sales?

The next challenge for Sony and Insomniac is keeping interest alive beyond the launch period. Seasonal discounts, holiday shopping and future updates could help attract additional buyers. However, matching Spider-Man’s sales performance may prove difficult. Wolverine has established a sizeable audience, but its early numbers suggest that sustaining demand could be harder than generating initial excitement.
