Apple has announced a major change in its artificial intelligence team. John Giannandrea is set to leave the company next year after a transition period. His exit ends a long and difficult stint during which Apple struggled to keep pace with the rapid growth of AI across the tech industry.

Giannandrea joined Apple in 2018 with hopes of strengthening machine learning projects and Siri. However, the company fell behind rivals in generative AI as Apple Intelligence arrived very late. The new Siri upgrade also could not launch on time and was pushed to next year. These delays raised concerns inside the company and across the industry.

Apple Restructures Its AI Leadership

Apple decided not to appoint a direct replacement for Giannandrea. Instead, the company divided the AI work among Craig Federighi, Eddy Cue, and Sabih Khan. This change aims to make AI an active part of Apple’s software, hardware, and services teams.

The biggest move came with the hiring of Amar Subramanya as the Vice President of AI. He will report to Craig Federighi. Subramanya will lead Apple’s foundation models, machine learning research, and AI safety. These areas will guide the next generation of Apple Intelligence and the new Siri.

A New Push to Strengthen Apple Intelligence

Subramanya brings strong experience from both Google and Microsoft. He spent sixteen years at Google and worked on major generative AI projects. He later served as corporate vice president of AI at Microsoft. His background gives Apple a fresh chance to strengthen its AI products and close the gap with rivals.

Apple’s AI division also faced other challenges. Many engineers from the models team have left in recent months. Some moved to competitors that are building larger AI systems. Reports also noted concerns inside Apple about plans to use outside AI technology. This raised questions about Apple’s long-term AI strategy.

Tim Cook said Amar Subramanya will play a key role in Apple’s future. He called AI an important part of Apple’s vision. The company now aims to bring a stronger version of Apple Intelligence and a more reliable Siri next year.

This leadership shift gives Apple a new direction. The company now hopes to sharpen its AI work, rebuild confidence, and move faster in a field that is constantly evolving. Amar Subramanya’s role will be central in shaping that future.
