Kingdom Hearts IV is still aiming for a 2027 release, despite being missing from the spotlight for a long time. Initially, it was showcased during June's Nintendo Direct, but there was no further news about its development. So, rumors started spreading that the game would be postponed.

However, at the D23 Disney Fan Event, game director Tetsuya Nomura assured fans that the game is on track and will launch in 2027. The director mentioned, “At this year's D23, we're finally able to announce a release date for Kingdom Hearts IV, and I can confidently say and promise that it will launch in 2027.” Further, he added, “Schedule-wise, development is very smooth, it's not like an 80% thing, 90%, it's a 100% thing, so we'll be there for sure.”

The first look of the game introduced Sora in a new setting and showed the game using Unreal Engine 5. Since then, Square Enix has kept details under wraps. The lack of new footage led some fans to think the game was in trouble. Nomura’s latest comments suggest that is not the case.

Kingdom Hearts IV Targets 2027

A 2027 launch could make Kingdom Hearts IV one of Square Enix’s biggest games that year. The publisher is also working on other major projects. This could make the timing of the release very important.

Kingdom Hearts IV has a lot to live up to. The series has a strong fan base thanks to its mix of Disney worlds, original characters, and fast combat. The new game will also move Sora’s story into its next stage.

Square Enix may need to spread its big releases across the year. Giving each game enough space could help them get more attention from players. The wait for Kingdom Hearts IV has been long. Still, Nomura’s latest update gives fans a clear target.
