Apple CEO John Ternus has drawn attention online for leaving his LinkedIn profile largely unchanged after taking the company’s top job on September 1, 2026. The page still identifies him with an older hardware engineering role rather than his new position as chief executive.
The difference has gained attention because LinkedIn is widely used for professional profiles, career updates, and corporate announcements. However, Ternus has not publicly explained why his page remains outdated. His recent activity on X also contrasts with his limited LinkedIn presence.
Ternus’ LinkedIn profile contains only basic details about his career. It lists his work at Apple but identifies him as vice president of hardware engineering. This title does not reflect either his latest promotion or his previous position as senior vice president of hardware engineering.
Ternus became senior vice president in 2021 after years in Apple’s hardware organization. He joined the company in 2001 and worked on several major product lines during his career. His work included hardware development connected with products such as the Mac, iPad, AirPods and Apple Watch.
His LinkedIn page also lists an earlier engineering position at Virtual Research Inc. and his mechanical engineering education at the University of Pennsylvania. However, the profile contains few other career details and no public posts announcing his move to Apple CEO.
While Ternus’ LinkedIn page remained unchanged, Apple updated its own leadership information after the executive transition. Ternus formally succeeded Tim Cook as CEO on September 1.
Cook had served as Apple CEO since 2011 after succeeding co-founder Steve Jobs. Apple had previously announced that Cook would move into the executive chairman role as part of the leadership change.
Ternus’ appointment followed more than 25 years at Apple. His long tenure included senior responsibility for the company’s hardware engineering operations before he moved into the chief executive position.
There is no public indication that the outdated LinkedIn title reflects anything beyond an unchanged profile. Ternus has also not said that LinkedIn is ‘not important’ for professionals or people seeking senior technology jobs. Claims making that connection remain an interpretation of his limited activity on the platform rather than a statement from the Apple CEO.
Ternus has taken a different approach on X. He recently created an account and opened his activity on the platform with a one-word post: ‘hello.’
The post quickly attracted widespread attention. According to reported figures, it had generated more than 81 million views and 523,000 likes at the time those figures were recorded.
Elon Musk also responded to the post. The Tesla and X Chief wrote, “Congrats!” He later added, “New Apple CEO posting on X.”
Ternus initially followed only a small number of accounts, including Apple, former CEO Tim Cook, and Apple marketing executive Greg Joswiak. His decision to establish a presence on X while leaving his LinkedIn profile unchanged has since become a topic of discussion across social media.
Ternus has not publicly addressed the attention surrounding his LinkedIn account. As a result, it remains unclear whether he plans to update the profile or intends to keep his presence on the professional networking platform limited.
The available information also does not establish that Ternus deliberately avoided updating LinkedIn to make a point about professional networking. His profile simply remains sparse despite his move into Apple’s highest executive position.
For now, Apple’s official leadership information reflects the September 1 transition, while Ternus’ LinkedIn profile continues to show an earlier chapter of his more than two-decade career at the company.
