Indian shares declined on Monday, October 19, as disappointing private bank earnings and elevated crude oil prices weakened market sentiment. The Nifty 50 fell 0.38% to 23,057.6, while the Sensex dropped 0.39% to 74,434.53 by 10:05 a.m. IST. Investors assessed September-quarter results while Brent crude hovered near USD 108 per barrel.
Private lenders led the early losses after HDFC Bank and Axis Bank missed profit expectations. The Nifty Private Bank index dropped 1.7%, reflecting concerns over margins and rising expenses. Meanwhile, public sector banks gained as investors responded to stronger results from selected state-owned lenders.
HDFC Bank shares fell 2% after weaker treasury income and higher provisions for bad loans affected quarterly performance. Its net interest margin also declined, adding pressure despite growth in lending activity. Axis Bank dropped 4.1% as higher operating expenses and weaker other income weighed on earnings.
Public sector lenders moved in the opposite direction, with their index rising 2.2% during early trading. Punjab National Bank climbed 5.4% after reporting an expansion in its net interest margin. Anita Gandhi, head of institutional business at Arihant Capital Markets, said investors appeared to favor public sector banks following quarterly results.
Crude oil remained another concern for investors, with Brent trading around USD 108 per barrel. High oil prices can increase India's import bill, raise inflation risks and pressure the rupee. Pankaj Pandey, head of retail research at ICICI Securities, said, "Crude continues to remain a bigger challenge for the market." He added that sustained market gains would require oil prices to cool.
Broader market performance remained mixed, with ten of sixteen major sectors trading higher. However, small-cap stocks declined 0.5%, while mid-caps slipped 0.2%. Urban Company shares fell 7.4% after the online home services provider reported wider quarterly losses.
Investors also watched the upcoming Jio Platforms initial public offering, which could affect near-term market liquidity. Persistent Middle East tensions and elevated oil prices may continue to influence trading sentiment.
