HSBC plans to open a new AI institute in Hong Kong during the first quarter of 2027. CEO Georges Elhedery announced the expansion at Hong Kong Fintech Week, highlighting the bank's growing investment in artificial intelligence. The institute will work with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to develop emerging technologies for banking.

The Hong Kong AI hub will expand HSBC's regional technology network following its Singapore center launch earlier this year. The bank aims to connect academic research with practical banking applications through the new institute. It will initially operate in Hong Kong before moving to the Northern Metropolis development zone.

The institute will focus on artificial intelligence, emerging technologies and workforce development. Its research priorities include AI safety, fraud detection, post-quantum cryptography and blockchain applications. HSBC also plans to strengthen its ability to introduce advanced technologies across financial services.

The expansion follows HSBC's July announcement about its Singapore AI hub. The bank planned to recruit more than 100 AI specialists for that center. Together, both locations could strengthen HSBC's technology capabilities across two major Asian financial markets.

HSBC is also expanding AI training across its global workforce of approximately 200,000 employees. The bank employs around 28,000 people in Hong Kong, making it a major private-sector employer. Elhedery acknowledged the technology's impact on employment during his conference remarks.

"AI is going to be disruptive. It's going to transform jobs," he said. His comments reflect growing changes across banking as financial institutions increase automation and rethink workforce requirements.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong regulators are preparing safeguards for wider AI adoption across financial services. Hong Kong Monetary Authority Chief Executive Eddie Yue announced Project SAGE to support responsible AI agent development. The initiative will examine governance, accountability and standards for trusted AI agents.

Around 80% of Hong Kong banks have already adopted AI or generative AI, according to Yue. The regulator also plans expert consultations and testing to assess how AI agents operate across financial institutions.

HSBC's Hong Kong institute therefore arrives as financial innovation and regulatory oversight advance together. Its development could strengthen the city's position in banking technology while preparing employees for AI-driven changes.
