Overtone, a new AI-powered matchmaking platform, has raised $18 million in seed funding to build a service that focuses on meaningful introductions rather than the mechanics of traditional dating apps.
Founded by Hinge creator Justin McLeod, the startup is backed by Match Group, FirstMark Capital, and Pace Capital. Unlike conventional dating platforms, Overtone positions itself as a matchmaking service. On this platform, users typically don’t upload public profiles, and they don’t really go browsing through hundreds of possible matches. Rather, the system depends on voice-based conversations to get a feel for their personality, interests, and even how they see relationship preferences working out, before it starts suggesting introductions.
McLeod says Overtone is built to make finding someone feel a bit less like endless scrolling in an app and more like getting an actual, thoughtful introduction. Instead of profiles, it leans into conversation, so the platform can spot compatibility and help cut down on that tired feeling a lot of people associate with swipe-based dating.
The launch arrives while the online dating industry is still hunting for fresh ways to improve the user experience. More than a few users seem frustrated with the whole endless swiping thing, so companies have been looking at more personalised methods for helping people build lasting connections.

After helping Hinge grow into one of the world's top relationship-driven platforms, McLeod is now placing a bet on fewer options and more carefully selected introductions, which could lead to better results.
With Overtone, the focus moves away from ‘curated profiles’ and constant browsing towards conversations and compatibility, basically giving users an option that feels different from the usual dating app routine.
