HDFC Bank CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan will retire on October 26, 2026, after deciding not to seek another term. His decision starts a formal leadership search at India’s largest private lender during a period of investor scrutiny.

The bank’s board met on Saturday and asked Jagdishan to reconsider. He maintained his position. The board will now speed up the appointment process and aims to select a successor before his final day.

HDFC Bank CEO Search Begins

Jagdishan had earlier appeared likely to seek a third term. His decision therefore changed expectations around the bank’s leadership. HDFC Bank told stock exchanges that he would leave at the close of business on October 26.

The board thanked him for guiding the lender through its merger with HDFC Ltd. It also credited him with supporting the bank’s growth and stability. Still, the next chief executive will inherit questions about leadership continuity, staff retention and execution after the merger.

Anand Dama, executive director at Nuvama, said, “The new CEO will have their task cut out given the ongoing challenges at the bank.” He added that the lender may have a chance of choosing an external candidate, although the board has not disclosed its preferred route.

HDFC Bank CEO Exit Follows Board Scrutiny

The HDFC Bank CEO announcement came months after former chairman Atanu Chakraborty resigned, citing “values and ethics.” An outside legal review later found no evidence supporting the governance concerns he raised. Even so, the exit increased investor attention on the bank’s leadership.

The bank later dismissed three senior executives and took action against other employees over the sale of high-risk Credit Suisse bonds to non-resident clients between 2019 and 2022. In July, the board also fined Jagdishan and two other executives Rs 1 lakh each after finding “business overreach” in a state agency deposit-pricing matter.

Jagdishan took charge in 2020 after spending decades at HDFC Bank. He joined its finance team in 1996, became business head for finance in 1999 and moved into the chief financial officer role in 2008. Former CEO Aditya Puri supported his appointment as successor.

Next HDFC Bank CEO Faces Market Tests

His early tenure included Reserve Bank of India restrictions on new digital products and credit-card issuance after repeated technology outages. Once those limits ended, Jagdishan led the integration of HDFC Ltd during higher interest rates and tighter banking-system liquidity.

Investors have questioned the financial gains from the 2023 merger. HDFC Bank shares have fallen 27% in 2026, with much of that decline following the former chairman’s departure in March. The stock also reached a more than two-year low on Thursday after proposed securities lawsuits in the United States. The bank said the cases lacked merit and that it would defend itself.

Still, the lender reported a 5% rise in standalone quarterly net profit to Rs 190.60 billion for the three months ended June 30. Its gross bad-loan ratio stood at 1.17% of total loans.

Equinomics Research founder G Chokkalingam said the stock could drop 2% to 3% on Monday following the CEO news. He also said the bank’s large balance sheet should help it attract qualified candidates. The speed and clarity of the board’s appointment process will now shape the leadership transition before October.
