YouTube creator Hank Green apologized to fans on Friday after backlash over his use of AI for content research. The creator said ChatGPT helped find academic papers and resources faster during busy production periods. Fans raised concerns after a recent Complexly video appeared to have an AI-like style. Green addressed the criticism on Reddit and said he relied too heavily on AI.

Green clarified that ChatGPT did not write the claims or opinions in his videos. He mainly used the tool to find papers and other resources for research. Still, he admitted that the habit affected his creative process and connection with viewers. “I have been relying too heavily on AI as a research aid,” Green wrote in his Reddit apology.

The issue started after viewers noticed a phrase that sounded like chatbot language. Green later said the line came from him and not ChatGPT. He also said the video came together under heavy pressure, which pushed him toward AI research.

Green called his growing AI use a bad habit that needed attention. He said the tool gave him a strong dopamine rush while helping him work faster. Green also said fans should clearly know when his words come from his own thinking.

The apology also brought changes to his content schedule across several projects. Green plans to reduce videos on Hankschannel and may pause uploads for some time. SciShow and Crash Course will also see fewer videos as Green changes his workflow.

Green will also pause his daily word games, SMUSH and 4x3, during this period. He plans to make more unscripted videos and spend more time on personal content.

The controversy adds to wider concerns about AI use among online creators. Green remains open to AI, but now wants a clearer and more careful process.
