GTA 6 is releasing globally on November 19, 2026, on consoles. In India, the Standard Edition of the game will cost around Rs. 5,999, while the Ultimate Edition will cost Rs. 7,499. However, there is a surprise for gamers who still prefer physical games. The retail box will not have a Blu-ray disc, instead, buyers will get a download code.

In one of his recent interviews, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said, “It doesn't really make sense for the consumer when the game is this big. Sony is withdrawing the physical discs for PlayStation games from January 2028, and Take-Two Interactive will make the same decision 14 months earlier.”

For GTA 6, players who want a physical edition have to go to a retail store, purchase a box containing the game, and then they get the code inside, instead of the physical disc. Once the code is redeemed on the Xbox or PlayStation Store, the game will be available for download like a digital purchase. Players who buy the game physically before November 20 will receive the Vintage Vice City Pack as a bonus.

A significant percentage of Take-Two’s business is already digital. The change also does not seem to have hurt demand. Zelnick called GTA 6 pre-orders ‘unprecedented’ and ‘astonishing,’ although he did not share sales numbers.

This could be a big change for Indian gamers. A disc can be sold, lent to a friend, or bought second-hand. A redeemed download code cannot be used in the same way. Buyers will also need enough storage space and an internet connection to download the game.

What GTA 6 Means for Indian Gamers

GTA 6 could be an early sign of where console gaming is heading. Physical boxes may remain on store shelves, but the disc inside could slowly disappear.

This matters in India, where used games can help players save money. Someone who spends Rs. 5,999 on GTA 6 may not recover part of that cost by selling the game later.

GTA 6 is still one of the biggest game launches in years. Its huge pre-order demand shows that players are ready to buy it. However, the missing disc may also change what Indian gamers expect from a physical game.
