The GTA 5 port for Nintendo Switch has been officially canceled. The port wasn’t an official one, but the cancelation came as a disappointment to millions of Nintendo Switch gamers. After the launch of GTA: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition on Switch consoles, GTA 5 could be one of the few GTA games on the handheld. However, Take-Two Interactive’s legal actions stopped it.
Earlier in September, a fan project by the lead modder Mojso created a wave among the Switch players regarding the unofficial port of GTA 5 for Switch consoles. The modder even expressed plans to create more ports for Android and iOS devices as well. At one point, when gamers were curious about the development of the port, Mojso announced that the port was shut down following legal action by Take-Two Interactive.
The conflict began in mid-September when the official Discord account for the modding team was banned for the team breaking rules of the platform. Mojso announced that the project was closed on September 28, with the entire group scattered on October 3. Additionally, the group was accused of utilizing leaked source code for the game, which brought trouble to them.
Though the exact reason for the project being shut down is unknown, the Switch port of GTA 5 faced the same fate as numerous other GTA fan projects have faced over the years. Notably, from the developers, as of now no official announcement is made to bring the 2013 GTA entry to Switch or Switch 2 consoles.

Getting GTA 5 to run on the Switch was never an easy task. The game is large, demanding, and hard to run on Switch consoles. However, the fan project showed that players badly want GTA games on Switch hardware, but Rockstar Games never said anything about this, maybe because of the technical difficulties.
The cancelation of the fan project is disappointing for sure, but fans should note that an unofficial port won’t bring the same experience as the original game. Even if the port came, it will never get Rockstar-supported cloud saves, achievements, or GTA Online progress; only an official update can bring all these features to them.
