The Indian government has launched GST 2.0 on 22 September 2025. The new system is simpler with only two tax rates: 5% and 18%. The changes have resulted in lower prices for many products. Though this is a matter of relief for many companies, slabs for premium phones priced above Rs. 50,000 remain unchanged.
Household electronics like TVs, air conditioners, refrigerators, and washing machines now have a lower GST. Prices have dropped as taxes moved from 28% to 18%. Some TVs now cost up to Rs. 85,000 less, depending on the model. Big brands like LG, Sony, and Panasonic have already updated their prices.
Smartphones above Rs. 50,000, including Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, and Xiaomi Mi 15 Ultra, remain at 18% GST. The government decided not to reduce taxes on phones, keeping their prices unchanged.
Many have been asking why GST for smartphones in India has not been reduced, despite a large number of devices obtaining price cuts owing to the relaxation of taxes.

Even though GST does not lower smartphone prices, festive sales can help buyers save. Amazon Great Indian Festival 2025 and Flipkart Big Billion Days started on 23 September 2025 and provide a reprieve to customers who want premium devices.
Discounts are available on phones, accessories, laptops, and other electronics. Prime members on Amazon got 24-hour early access to deals.
Popular items on sale include Apple AirPods Pro 2, Samsung Galaxy Book laptops, iPads, boAt soundbars, and Philips grooming products. These offers give buyers a chance to save even without GST reductions.
GST 2.0 makes electronics like TVs, ACs, and washing machines more affordable. Premium smartphones above Rs. 50,000 still cost the same as before. Buyers need to rely on festival discounts or retailer deals to get lower prices. The most recent GST reforms do not seem to be aimed at handheld devices, as many gadgets still maintain the same charges.
