YouTube appears to be testing a new social feature called Tamba. Android Authority found references to the name, a logo and dozens of icons in the latest YouTube Android app package. The discovery suggests Google may be preparing a more community-driven experience inside or alongside YouTube.
The company has not announced Tamba or confirmed its purpose. The evidence comes from an APK teardown, so the feature may change before release or never reach users.
The app code includes references to followers, follow requests, direct messages and group chats. It also mentions posts, photo and video sharing, hearts, replies and voice notes.
These elements resemble features found on Instagram, X and other social platforms. They suggest YouTube may want users to interact more directly with creators and other viewers rather than only watch videos.
The references point to a separate package named ‘com.google.android.youtube.sandbox.’ The ‘sandbox’ label often signals a protected testing environment for experimental products.
That does not prove Tamba will become a standalone app. Google could use it to test social tools before integrating the most successful ones into the main YouTube experience.
YouTube already has Shorts, comments, community posts, and live chat. Tamba could deepen those connections by adding private messaging, group conversations, and richer creator-audience interaction.
For creators, stronger social tools could increase engagement and retention. For users, they could make YouTube feel less like a video platform and more like a full social network.
Google has not shared a launch timeline or official description. Until the company confirms the project, Tamba remains an intriguing signal of YouTube’s possible social ambitions rather than a confirmed product.
