Google has introduced a voluntary exit program (VEP) for employees in the U.S. The program applies to teams in knowledge and information (K&I), central engineering, marketing, research, and communications. The announcement came on June 10, 2025, as part of Google’s ongoing cost-cutting efforts following major layoffs in 2023.

Nick Fox Shares Internal Memo

Nick Fox, who was promoted last year during the K&I reorganization, addressed the changes in a memo to employees. He described the VEP as a “supportive exit path” for those not aligned with Google’s strategy. Fox encouraged high performers to stay, saying, “If you’re excited about your work and performing well, I really (really!) hope you don’t take this.”

Google Return-to-Office Policy and AI Investment Plans

Google has also asked employees who live within 50 miles of an office to return in person. This change is part of a hybrid work plan to improve collaboration and productivity.

The buyouts follow a statement from Google CFO Anat Ashkenazi in October 2024. She stressed the need for cost optimization to fund the company’s growing AI investments. In line with this strategy, Google is upgrading its internal learning platform to train staff in modern AI tools.

Impact Still Unclear

Google has not confirmed how many employees will accept the buyout. Analysts see this move as a strategic restructuring rather than another round of mass layoffs. Google shifting its focus to artificial intelligence reshapes both, its workforce and product development goals.
