Google has revealed fresh details about Project Aura, a new line of Android XR smart glasses, at a virtual Android XR event. The company confirmed a 2026 launch and a staged rollout. The glasses operate on Android XR and use Gemini AI for real-time functionality.

New Device Categories Revealed

The preview includes two models. Audio glasses rely on built-in speakers, microphones, and cameras. These models accept voice instructions and deliver spoken responses from Gemini. The audio design aims for simple daily use and long wear.

The second variant includes an in-lens display that shows private, contextual information such as navigation prompts, live translations, and repair guides. This model targets hands-free tasks that benefit from visual cues.

Project Aura is the flagship device from XREAL, running on Android XR. The design uses a tethered processing module and a Qualcomm XR Gen 2 Plus chip. The module boosts graphics and AI processing for the display glasses. Project Aura offers a 70-degree field of view for richer overlays.

Focus on Developers and Design

Google highlighted developer tools and system updates. A preview Android XR SDK released today includes sensor access tools and ready-made UI elements. Developers can sync content with Windows and place Android apps side by side with PC programs. These changes aim to accelerate app development for glasses and headsets.

Privacy and form factor received special attention. Google added visible recording indicators and strict sensor controls in demos. The company also emphasized stylish partnerships with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to improve everyday wearability. The strategy focuses on both utility and comfort.

Google’s entry in the smart glasses sector reshapes the competitive field for Meta’s Ray Ban smart glasses. The pricing for Google’s XR glasses has not been publicly announced yet. Market watchers expect Google to aim for broad availability and a range of price points. The Android XR rollout may prompt more apps and services to move to wearables.

The company plans a staged rollout next year. Audio first models appear before display models. Google also plans to help third-party makers integrate Android XR across new devices. The result could make smart glasses a mainstream accessory rather than a niche gadget.
