Google is preparing to move beyond ChromeOS, confirming that support for the operating system will continue through mid-2034 before the platform is phased out. The move is tied to Googlebook OS, a new operating system that combines elements of ChromeOS with the Android technology stack.
According to the tech giant, the transition is intended to bring stronger cross-device features, native Android applications, and built-in Gemini-powered AI tools to its laptop ecosystem.
Current Chromebook owners will see no immediate change. Google confirmed that existing devices will continue receiving software updates and security patches throughout their supported lifetimes.
The company has also stated that many newer Chromebook models will eventually be eligible to move to Googlebook OS. Details about which devices will qualify and how the migration will work are yet to be announced.
Google's support guidance says qualifying devices whose 10-year support period extends beyond 2034 will have a transition path to Googlebook OS. The company says it wants the process to be smooth for schools, businesses and other organizations that rely heavily on managed Chromebook fleets.
Googlebook OS is being built on the Android technology stack rather than the existing ChromeOS foundation. Google says the new platform will combine desktop web browsing with native Android app support and deeper connections with Android phones.
Users will also get features such as easier file sharing and task hand-offs between devices, alongside Gemini-powered AI assistance. Google is positioning Googlebook as a more capable laptop platform while retaining some of the characteristics that made Chromebooks popular, including security, simplicity, and ease of management.

Google's shift will take longer for schools and businesses. The first major management features for Googlebook are scheduled to begin rolling out in the second half of 2027. The company said that existing Chrome Enterprise and Chrome Education upgrades will continue to work with current devices. It also plans to maintain support for web applications and provide APIs for organizations using third-party enterprise management tools.
The transition therefore marks a long-term change rather than an immediate end to Chromebooks. ChromeOS remains supported for years, while Google gradually develops Googlebook OS as the next platform for its laptop ecosystem.
