Google and YouTube have launched the Digital Wellbeing Guidebook for Indian Families, a free resource designed to help parents, caregivers and educators support children in navigating the digital world. The guidebook has been developed with inputs from experts in mental health, child development and education, keeping the needs of Indian families in mind.
The resource focuses on helping families build healthy digital habits rather than simply reducing screen time. It covers topics such as online safety, shared device usage, digital payments and balancing technology with everyday life.
According to Google, the guidebook reflects how technology is used in many Indian homes, where smartphones and tablets are often shared among family members. It offers practical suggestions for handling privacy, child safety, and age-appropriate content in such settings.
Rather than just imposing constraints, the handbook suggests that parents engage in continuous discussions with their children about their online activities, and even set some boundaries with children’s participation in the process of developing such guidelines.
Google noted that the internet had become a place where education, creativity, and communication took place.
The guidebook has been prepared in consultation with experts from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Fortis Healthcare, and specialists in education and children’s development.
It has practical suggestions for establishing technology-free zones, making media agreements with the family and promoting good online behavior. The goal is to provide a practical implementation of research findings for parents to use in their day-to-day activities.
The guidebook also introduces families to Google's existing digital wellbeing tools.
These include supervised learning sessions using YouTube and YouTube Kids, Family Link parental control settings, Family Center, Take a Break tips, Bedtime Reminders and School Time Mode, and many others that contribute to making the studying process less distracting.
Furthermore, the report covers the ‘Who’s Watching’ function, which enables several family members to use the same device without compromising their privacy. This function, according to Google, is aimed at enhancing the security of children as well as protecting adult users’ privacy.

With the release of the guidebook, Google and YouTube are urging families to emphasize the importance of good technology usage as opposed to considering screen time the only important factor.
Good digital practices, according to the companies, will be created through good communication, realistic expectations, and good decision-making. The guidebook intends to assist Indian families to find ways of using their digital devices effectively.
