Google has decided to invest $15 billion in India over the next five years and unveil its largest artificial intelligence hub outside the US in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. CEO Sundar Pichai shared the plans with PM Narendra Modi, highlighting the hub’s potential to accelerate AI adoption and innovation in India.
The project combines data center infrastructure, AI computing power, and energy to promote innovation and technological discovery on a large scale.
The Google AI hub in India is a joint venture with Adani Group. It will possess gigawatt-scale computing power, an international subsea gateway, energy, and related infrastructure on a large scale.
Google claims that the hub aims to bring “industry-leading technology to enterprises and users in India,” and to assist in AI-led growth and innovation. The hub is expected to support the country’s AI services, research, and digital infrastructure.
Sundar Pichai pointed out the importance of the hub as he explained, “Through it, we will bring our industry-leading technology to enterprises and users in India, thus speeding up AI innovation to take place and letting growth happen all over the country.”
PM Modi also shared his happiness and gave a hint that he was “delighted” by the startup of the Google AI Hub in the “dynamic” city of Visakhapatnam and assured that the project would have a very powerful impact on the digital economy of India.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu characterized the project as a “new chapter” in the digitization of the state, pointing out its importance for the startup ecosystem, the business sector, and human capital.
Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Ashwini Vaishnaw also attended the formal agreement ceremony. Vaishnaw noted that the AI hub will support India's aim for AI education and digital services. Google Cloud CEO, Thomas Kurian, referred to the project as a "landmark investment in India's digital future" that ensures the development of AI and the expansion of digital services in India.
The Google AI hub in Andhra Pradesh is part of the intense competition among major tech firms such as Microsoft and Amazon, which are also investing in AI and data center infrastructure in India.
Over 900 million internet users are expected by the end of 2025. Google’s investment reaffirms and consolidates India’s standing as a world-class technology leader, while also creating vast avenues for research, enterprise solutions, and the upcoming AI-skilled workforce.
