Google has announced plans to invest USD 15 billion in Malaysia over 2027 and 2028. The investment will support new data center campuses, clean energy projects and workforce training. The company also expects the expansion to create thousands of jobs across the country.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, November 4, by Google's parent company Alphabet. The investment will strengthen the company's computing infrastructure and expand its operations in Southeast Asia.

Google plans to build new data center campuses in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. These facilities will add to its first campus at Elmina Business Park in Selangor, which is already operational.

Alphabet and Google's President and Chief Investment Officer Ruth Porat said, "This investment aligns with Malaysia's development priorities, providing the foundational computing capacity to deliver the upside of innovation across the country while adding local power and water resources as our operations scale."

Create Thousands of Jobs

Google expects the construction phase to contribute an average of USD 1.1 billion annually to Malaysia's gross domestic product. The company also estimates that the work will support more than 37,000 local jobs each year during construction. Once the campuses become operational, they are expected to support more than 9,000 local jobs annually.

Google said average wages for these positions could be 45% higher than the national median. The company also plans to increase clean energy capacity in Malaysia by more than 1 gigawatt. This will add to the country's national electricity grid as demand for power grows.

Clean Energy and Skills Development

Google said it will cover the full electricity costs of its data center campuses. The company will also pay for the direct infrastructure expenses required to connect the facilities to the national grid.

The company has committed to following local regulations while developing its energy infrastructure. It also expects its Malaysian campuses to achieve a Power Usage Effectiveness rating between 1.12 and 1.14, reflecting their planned energy efficiency.

Alongside infrastructure development, Google has announced four new training programmes. These initiatives aim to improve the skills of 800,000 Malaysians over the next five years. The investment highlights Google's growing focus on Malaysia as a regional technology and computing hub.
