Google has launched a new program in the Asia Pacific to support climate solutions using artificial intelligence. The program, ‘AI for the Planet,’ focuses on utilizing AI for sustainability and real-world impact.

The Google Climate AI Accelerator will run for three months, supporting startups, research groups, and non-profit organizations. These groups are already working on climate tech solutions that simplify farming, clean energy generation, environmental protection, and disaster response.

Focus on Climate Innovation

Asia faces serious climate risks, with many countries facing floods, heatwaves, and food supply issues. At the same time, digital growth is rising fast, creating both pressure and opportunity. The new program aims to help solutions grow faster and reach more people.

The accelerator is not for founders in the ideation stage but for startups that already have a working prototype. These teams will receive help from Google experts on how to use advanced AI tools in their projects. This support can help them scale their solutions.

While the selection process has not been shared yet, many climate-focused AI startups in Asia are expected to apply. After shortlisting, the first group will start with a boot camp in Singapore.

How AI Can Help Climate Challenges

Tech companies are now using AI beyond office work to solve climate problems. It helps in energy prediction, traffic control, and farming decisions. Google has previously worked on such tools. Its systems help improve solar and wind energy forecasts. The company has also developed tools to reduce traffic pollution and improve crop planning.

However, AI also requires a large amount of energy. Experts warn that data centres may use much more electricity in the future. This raises questions about the true impact the technology offers. Still, Google believes the benefits can outdo the risks.

Balancing Growth and Sustainability

The company says environmental AI can help reduce carbon emissions and improve climate planning. It also highlights the need for teamwork. Experts, developers, and policymakers must work together for better results.

The Google Climate AI Accelerator can provide strong support to climate-tech startups in scaling their solutions. It can also help the region fight climate challenges more effectively.
