Google is rolling out a major update to its Google Home ecosystem that improves Nest cameras, Matter-compatible smart home devices, and the Google Home app. The update, released on October 29, introduces new energy-monitoring capabilities, improved device controls, and several bug fixes across Android and iOS.
The latest release also updates Gemini for Home, fixes voice-command issues, and makes smart home controls more reliable. The update covers multiple devices and services, including Nest cameras, thermostats, smart speakers, and Chromecast with Google TV.
One key addition is improved support for Matter-compatible devices. The Google Home app can now recognize different Matter closure types, including garage doors, gates, windows, blinds, and cabinets. Instead of displaying generic gate controls, the app will show the appropriate device icons and controls on Android.
Compatible Matter smart plugs and energy monitors can also display real-time power consumption in milliwatts (mW) and total energy usage in kilowatt-hours (kWh). These details appear directly on device tiles and controller screens.
The update addresses several camera-related issues. On iOS, Google has improved event timeline scrolling to prevent Video Not Available errors when users navigate between recordings.
Android users with foldable phones should also get smoother live camera viewing when folding or unfolding their devices. Google has also improved person and Familiar Face detection on the first-generation wired Nest Doorbell, especially when visitors are farther away or standing at an angle.
Software improvements have also been introduced for older Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell models migrated to the Google Home app.

Google has included one-tap shortcuts that let users set energy-saving temperatures directly from the thermostat controller or Home view. The feature makes it easier to conserve energy when users leave home.
Google Home Premium subscribers can also access a dedicated features and benefits section by tapping their profile icon and selecting Google Home Premium.
The update improves Gemini's ability to transfer music between rooms and distinguish between regular timers, alarms, and media sleep timers. It also fixes unexpected voice responses, unreliable YouTube TV commands, and volume-control issues.
Additionally, Google has addressed zero-volume timer and alarm settings. The improvements are rolling out alongside updates for Nest Wifi Pro, Chromecast with Google TV, and Google Home speakers. Users can check for the latest Google Home app version on Android and iOS.
