Google has started a new two-week release cycle for Chrome with the rollout of Chrome 153 across desktop, Android, and iOS. The company previously released major Chrome versions every four weeks. Google says the faster schedule will help deliver security fixes, bug patches, performance changes, and new browser features more quickly.
The move also comes as Google expands the use of artificial intelligence in security research and software development. Chrome’s security teams now use automated tools, large language models, and reports from external researchers to find and fix browser flaws.
Chrome 153 marks the first stable release under Google’s new two-week cycle. Under the previous system, major Chrome versions arrived about once every four weeks. Before 2021, the browser followed a six-week schedule.
Google said the faster cycle will allow its teams to release smaller updates more often. The Chrome team described the change as ‘a win for the entire web.’ According to Google, shorter development windows can also help web developers receive browser fixes and new web features sooner.
Chrome users on desktop, Android, and iOS will now receive more frequent stable releases. However, each update is expected to include fewer changes because Google will divide development work across shorter release periods.
Chrome 154 is scheduled to arrive on September 22, continuing the new two-week pattern.
Security is one of the main reasons behind the change. Google has increased its use of AI tools to search for software flaws and support vulnerability research. At the same time, community researchers continue to report security bugs through Chrome’s existing reporting programs.
Google said shorter release cycles can reduce the ‘N-day patch gap.’ This is the period between the public discovery of a security problem and the delivery of a fix to users. A shorter gap can limit the time attackers have to use known vulnerabilities before users receive patches.
The company said the faster schedule should also make it easier to isolate software regressions. Smaller releases contain fewer changes, which can help developers identify the source of a problem when a new update causes an error.
Google previously moved Chrome from a six-week cycle to a four-week schedule in 2021 as part of its effort to release software changes more frequently.
Enterprise customers will have more flexibility under the new Chrome release system. Google recommends the two-week Stable channel for most organizations because it provides faster security fixes and browser updates.
However, companies that cannot manage updates every two weeks can continue using Chrome’s Extended Stable channel. That option follows an eight-week update schedule, giving IT teams more time to test browser changes before wider deployment.
Google is also preparing other Chrome changes. Starting with Chrome 155, Android users are expected to receive a redesigned notification permission interface. Google said the change is intended to reduce notification prompt fatigue and help users make clearer choices about website alerts.
Other browser developers are also moving toward faster release schedules. Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, and Brave have introduced or explored shorter update cycles as browser development speeds up.
